Passion is fleeting.

Somedays, we wake up feeling so driven by our passion it nearly levitates us from beds into the world. Other days, it’s absence feels like a weight we need to pry off our chests to have the energy to stand.

Passion is volatile, so maybe we shouldn’t be driven by it at all. Perhaps there is a need to adjust how we talk and think about the concept.

The creative mind behind Per Say and The French Laundry, Thomas Keller, has argued that passion is an overrated concept. He insists that instead of relying on it, we should be emphasizing desire as the core driver of achievement.

Passion is something that we tend to overemphasize, that we certainly place too much importance on. It ebbs and flows. To me, it’s about desire. If you have constant, unwavering desire to be a cook, then you’ll be a great cook. If it’s only about passion, sometimes you’ll be good and sometimes you won’t. You’ve got to come in every day with a strong desire – Thomas Keller

While Keller may be referencing cooking his sentiment applies across disciplines and workplaces. Passion is great. It gives us a euphoric feeling that makes the hard work fell worthwhile. But it’s not something to rely on.

Build work habits and routines that are conducive to fulfilling your desires and watch the passion follow.

Instead, try working on your desire. Remind yourself there will be days that feel like a slog, but working through it and the subsequent feeling of accomplishment can so often reinvigorate your passion. Build work habits and routines that are conducive to fulfilling your desire and watch the passion follow.
