As your team grows, you inevitably have to start thinking about scaling your culture. We recently sat down to\u00a0think hard about what makes working at Toggl special.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll get into the\u00a0details\u00a0after the jump, but for those who prefer a more visual explanation, here are the values that guide Toggl, in a\u00a0handy infographic form:<\/p>\n

\"Toggl<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got some interesting things planned for the future, and we\u2019ll be needing more amazing people\u00a0(check out our open job tests<\/a> to see if we have something for you!) to help us get them done.<\/p>\n

Toggl wouldn\u2019t have come this far without an extraordinarily well-oiled team.\u00a0A lot of the success can probably be attributed to great chemistry.<\/p>\n

But how do you scale\u00a0good\u00a0chemistry?<\/p>\n

To help us be better at finding the best fitting people for the team, we had to think about the values that have served us well so far \u2013 and write them down.<\/p>\n

1 \u2013\u00a0People create value<\/h1>\n

Every successful startup has a \u201csecret sauce\u201d \u2013 ours is people.<\/p>\n

The key to letting people do great work is to give them the freedom to decide what they work on and how they go about doing it. Our teams operate with quite a bit of autonomy so independent types who don\u2019t expect to be spoon-fed will thrive at Toggl.<\/p>\n

But as we\u2019ve learned from Spiderman \u2013 with great freedom comes great responsibility\u00a0(or something to that effect). Togglers are smart about planning their own work and\u00a0are able to keep themselves engaged without needing someone\u00a0to crack a whip.<\/p>\n

2 \u2013 Great People Do Great Work Everywhere<\/h1>\n

If you\u2019re a talented individual, you don\u2019t need to sit in an office to do amazing work.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been two years since we embraced a remote working culture, and we haven\u2019t looked back.\u00a0Remote work gives us the ability to hire the best people for the job no matter where they might live\u00a0\u2013 without having to branch out to new cities with expensive offices.<\/p>\n

At the same time, remote work\u00a0is not\u00a0about slashing costs\u00a0\u2013 in fact,\u00a0we do a lot of traveling to make sure people get some face time.\u00a0Communication is absolutely crucial if you\u2019re running a globally dispersed team, and nothing beats a handshake and a conversation.<\/p>\n

You can expect a\u00a0few bigger get-togethers every year, with smaller team trips in between the bigger meetups.<\/p>\n

3 \u2013 Get Things Done<\/h1>\n

Ideas are nice \u2013 but the execution is a thousand times better!<\/p>\n

If you never take the first to actually start working on something, you\u2019ll\u00a0spend an eternity on trying to come up with the perfect idea. And while you\u2019d be thinking, somebody else would be busy doing.<\/p>\n

You simply cannot plan for absolutely every contingency \u2013 what happens when your perfect, carefully constructed plan\u00a0starts falling apart the second it meets real world? It\u2019s best to run with the first solid idea you get and put all your energy into getting it made.<\/p>\n

4 \u2013 Communicate. And Over-communicate.<\/h1>\n

Did you know the Titanic received two ice warnings before it struck an iceberg, but her radio operator let them\u00a0slide? Yeah, that did not end\u00a0so well.<\/p>\n

Communication is super important, especially with a remote team<\/a>. Consequently, we believe there are no dumb questions \u2013 nor is there such a thing as \u201cover-communication\u201d.<\/p>\n

Talking is a magical thing that helps avoid a lot of misunderstandings down the road. Also, to keep communication open and honest, Toggl is a judgment-free zone. When s**t happens, we move on. Doesn\u2019t matter if you fail \u2013 the important thing is whether you can learn from your failures.<\/p>\n

5 \u2013\u00a0No\u00a0know-it-alls<\/h1>\n

People who innovate are never happy with the status quo.<\/p>\n

Encouraging people to keep an open mind is important to us.\u00a0You can\u2019t make great things unless you\u2019re willing to experiment. Technology and the world around us are always changing \u2013 so why hang on to dogmas?\u00a0If you have an idea for doing something in a new way, then just\u00a0go for it!<\/p>\n

6 \u2013 Keeping it Human<\/h1>\n

There\u2019s something really wrong with a job if\u00a0you wake up every day dreading\u00a0to pick up your laptop.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no reason you shouldn\u2019t have fun and enjoy life with the people you work with. Also, it\u2019s a lot easier to cope with challenges\u00a0when you know you can\u00a0always talk about them.\u00a0Expect cake. Expect friendly faces. Expect work sessions that casually turn into pub crawls.<\/p>\n

Even if you work remotely,\u00a0you\u2019ll probably find a fun channel to follow in our Slack. And as mentioned before, there will be traveling \u2013 we don\u2019t want anyone to feel left out so keep your suitcase at the ready!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
