One of them is to <strong>work faster. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While working faster may seem like a ticket to more stress, it can actually be a great way to take control of your day and reclaim your free time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working more productively (getting more done in fewer hours) can have a positive impact on your mental health. Long working hours are linked with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/psychological-medicine\/article\/abs\/long-working-hours-and-symptoms-of-anxiety-and-depression-a-5-year-follow-up-of-the-whitehall-ii-study\/B19F5D1AC436F10E5954C8ADBBE2AC57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased risks of anxiety and depression<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in a results-driven work environment, finishing your work on time means putting it away, switching off, and enjoying a greater work-life balance. Track progress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to continuously track your progress and check things off your daily to-do list. This will leave you with a sense of accomplishment as you complete each task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChunking\u201d tasks into smaller pieces will also help fight anxiety. It\u2019s a lot more nerve-wracking to think \u201cI have 10 tasks to complete this week\u201d than \u201cI have one task to complete today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling to get ahead on your to-do list, try using the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2018\/oct\/14\/the-lost-art-of-concentration-being-distracted-in-a-digital-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five more rule.<\/a>\u201d The rule says that whenever you feel like quitting, you should instead push yourself to complete just five more of whatever you\u2019re doing (five more minutes, five more questions, etc.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will help you become more mentally disciplined.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a team level, managers can hold daily status meetings to make sure everyone\u2019s work is aligned, so each team member can get work done faster. Some psychologists describe this as a \u201cstate of complete immersion in an activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reach a flow state, you\u2019ll need to block out stretches of uninterrupted time each day. Turn off notifications from apps and websites while working, and avoid checking your emails and messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, try to schedule meetings on certain days of the week or at certain times of the day, so they don\u2019t cause constant interruptions. If a meeting doesn\u2019t strictly need to happen, it\u2019s better to make it an email instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few tips to avoid distractions while working from home: work from a clutter-free, closed room with a desk, and practice <a href=\"https:\/\/async.twist.com\/asynchronous-communication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asynchronous communication<\/a> when possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, turn off your phone or switch to silent mode. Switch off social media, mute desktop notifications, and close applications that you don\u2019t need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling with background noise from family members or neighbors, try using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23131327\/how-to-iphone-white-noise-background-sounds-ios-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white noise app<\/a> or noise-canceling headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Practice time blocking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many <a href=\"https:\/\/toggl.com\/track\/time-management-techniques\/\">time management techniques<\/a> out there designed to help you get more work done, faster. One of these techniques is called \u201ctime blocking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time blocking means breaking your day up into short blocks of time, each of which is devoted to a specific task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a great way to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organize your calendar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give yourself time and space for deep work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get rid of unnecessary tasks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fight perfectionism by giving yourself a fixed amount of time to complete each task&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With time blocking, you can fight \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/1955\/11\/19\/parkinsons-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parkinson\u2019s Law<\/a>\u201d, a classic saying coined by historian and management scholar Cyril Northcote Parkinson in 1955.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parkinson\u2019s law states that \u201cWork expands to fill the time available for its completion.\u201d If you\u2019ve ever found yourself dragging your feet when working towards a far-off deadline, you know just how true this can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several variations on time blocking, including <a href=\"https:\/\/toggl.com\/blog\/timeboxing\">timeboxing<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/toggl.com\/track\/pomodoro-timer-toggl\/\">Pomodoro Technique<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timeboxing is very similar to time blocking. But it includes less flexibility and strict deadlines limiting how much time you can spend on each task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pomodoro Technique, invented by business consultant <a href=\"https:\/\/francescocirillo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Francesco Cirillo<\/a>, is a very granular type of time blocking that involves working in 25-minute intervals separated by short breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Practice mindfulness and meditation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wondering how to work fast in the long term? It\u2019s not enough just to work quickly each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also need to be able to manage stress. Otherwise, you won\u2019t be able to sleep well and recharge, and you may struggle with inefficiency and burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Techniques like mindfulness and meditation can help you relax. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2010\/11\/wandering-mind-not-a-happy-mind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvard researchers have found<\/a> that our minds are lost in thought 47% of the time, and these intrusive thoughts can lead to anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center <a href=\"https:\/\/sps.columbia.edu\/news\/how-meditation-can-help-you-focus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claim meditation can change the structure and function of the brain<\/a>, blocking out unwanted thoughts while increasing focus and improving attention span. Meditation may increase the brain\u2019s ability to process information, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/meditation-in-depth#meditation-and-the-brain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research cited by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several different types of meditation you could practice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mindfulness meditation<\/strong> is all about focusing on your breathing and being hyper-aware of the sensations you\u2019re experiencing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>concentrative meditation, <\/strong>you\u2019ll focus your attention on a particular point (such as a word, a breath, or an object.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some types of meditative relaxation practices, such as <strong>yoga <\/strong>and <strong>tai chi<\/strong>, involve moving your body in specific ways. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Disconnect from work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, it\u2019s important to leave work at work. While it may be difficult to put down an urgent project or \u201clet go\u201d at the end of a stressful day, overworking is a one-way ticket to burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seventy-six percent of respondents to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kornferry.com\/about-us\/press\/worried-workers-korn-ferry-survey-finds-professionals-are-more-stressed-out-at-work-today-than-5-years-ago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Korn Ferry survey<\/a> said stress at work has had a negative impact on their personal relationships. Sixty-six percent said they had lost sleep due to workplace stressors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/ecoj.12166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies have shown<\/a> that productivity drops sharply after 49 hours of work per week.
