Pomodoro timer and time tracker | Toggl

The Pomodoro timer for true productivity

The Pomodoro Technique is the time management method to beat procrastination, one 25-minute sprint at a time.

Use Toggl to run Pomodoro sessions in your browser, desktop, and mobile apps. Log every pomodoro cycle as tracked time you can review later.

How You Can Use Toggl’s Pomodoro Timer

A free Pomodoro timer inside a complete time tracker

Most pomodoro apps start and stop a countdown, then forget it ever happened. Toggl's Pomodoro timer is built into a time tracker and time management tool, so you can log work sessions against tasks and projects.

The Pomodoro aspect remains dead simple: Start a session, work the interval, and take the break. At the end of the week, you'll know where your focus time went, not just that you sat through 20 sessions.

Toggl's Browser Extensions

Switch on Pomodoro mode in the Toggl browser extension settings, so the break reminders can arrive right in Chrome or Firefox (as long as your browser stays open)

Get the browser extension

Toggl's Desktop Apps

Open Preferences in the Toggl desktop app to turn on the Pomodoro Timer and set custom intervals for work and rest. The default is the classic 25 minutes and a 5-minute break but you can set your own split.

Get Toggl for MacOS or Windows.

Toggl's Mobile Apps

Tap the Pomodoro option on the Timer tab in the iOS or Android app. Set your intervals, choose whether the next pomodoro cycle auto-starts, and switch to full-screen focus mode when you want the phone to show nothing but the countdown.

It's not one of those apps where you need to spend half a day figuring out how to actually use it: sessions can be started as they happen or added later, and once the app has got a feel for your schedule and how you work, it'll even make suggestions about what you want to track next.

FAQs

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The pomodoro technique is a time management method for improving focus and productivity. Francesco Cirillo invented it as a student in the late 1980s, using a tomato-shaped kitchen timer to break studying into 25-minute rounds. The time management method remains the same today: work one interval, take a 5-minute break, and after four pomodoro cycles take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. The short and long breaks help organize work into manageable intervals to improve productivity.

Can I change the 25/5 intervals with Toggl's Pomodoro timer?

Yes. You can easily set custom intervals for work and break time in the desktop app's Preferences or in the mobile app settings. For example, you can set shorter rounds for admin work and longer ones for deep work. You can also choose whether the next interval auto-starts and switch to full-screen focus mode.

Is Toggl just a Pomodoro timer?

No, Toggl is a full time tracker with a Pomodoro timer built into it. This makes it much more useful for recording time, logging time against tasks, and reviewing your work to see where your time really goes.

Most pomodoro timer apps count down, ding, and reset, after which the session disappears the moment it ends. With Toggl, you can save every time entry is against a task, project, or even client. At the end of the week you can see how many focused hours went where.

That same tracked time feeds into your task management and reporting. It also sits alongside your calendar events on one timeline, so meetings and focus time are visible in one place. For most people, Toggl can take the place of three productivity tools — the Pomodoro timer apps, the to-do apps, and the time tracking apps.

Is Toggl free for freelancers?

Yes, and the free plan is built to be genuinely usable solo rather than a trial in disguise as it includes one-click tracking, focus mode, calendar integrations, and useful planning with boards, tasks, and task estimates. When you’re ready to upgrade, you get billable rates, timeline views, milestones, tags, and much more.
